6th May 1998 The New Global Resourcing Paradigm

Speaker Shamus Rae - MD Compass Connections
Summary Over the last few years, there has been a dramatic increase in the capacity of global telecommunications and a commensurate reduction in unit costs. Many large corporates have their own infrastructures allowing operations to be managed on a continental or even global basis. Now with the Internet and de-regulations of telecom companies, medium and smaller size companies can take advantage of the benefits. These include lower cost manufacturing and administration, dramatically improved service turn-round times as work "follows the sun", and high quality through using well educated and English speaking personnel.

With the planned launch of hundreds of satellites, and the encircling of the globe with fibre optic cables, the capacity, and therefore opportunities, for global telecommunications seems unlimited. New business models will undoubtedly be created. This presentation is a chance to listen to the experience of a pioneer and to discuss the business opportunities, and even perhaps the social implications, in the years to come.

Shamus Rae Shamus Rae worked with Mark Atkins at British Airways to develop the shared service centre in Mamba undertaking various electronic transactions. They have now formed their own offshore operation, Compass Connections, with their first centers in Mumbai and Colombo that are being set up initially for the banking and insurance industries. It will work with key strategic partners to provide full global resourcing, process movement and skill transfer consultancy.

The aim is not to outsource complete operations but to allow work to be effectively overflowed or decanted offshore, while control of the overall process remains clearly with the customer.
